Title: Str00dle 5cudo Build
Post by: str00dle on January 18, 2011, 12:56:47 PM
Hi Guys

I have been hanging around this site for the best part of a year while i have been saving up for a kit.  The idea is that me and my brother are going to build a 5cudo for him first and then one for me.  We originally planned a 360 then a 430 but after hearing the exhaust note on the cougar before the kit was even finished we were hooked.

I have been following BillyWiz build every day and look forward to his updates, we did all the shows last year as well as a couple of visits to DNA where the guys are so helpful and always take the time to discuss things.

Since November we have been looking around for a decent Cougar in the Reading area for months, they seem hard to come by and most the time stupidly priced.  But as luck would have it after 3 months of looking 2 came up in the same week.  So we acted quickly and now have the 2 cougars we need.

Off to DNA tomorrow to place the order. And here begins the build Diary

All the best guys, looks like these kits are flying out of DNA's doors. You'll be happy with your choice of kit, I look forward to the build thread, make sure you take loads of pictures, I got a little too carried away with the build to take that many!!!

Hi Str00dle,

Look forward to you build mate, the second one should be a doddle. I like your idea to do your brothers first, then yours will be perfect having made any mistakes on his. lol.

Just kidding, bet they'll both be awesome. And i understand what you mean about the exhaust, it does sound brutal.

Best of luck, keep us all posted.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys and to Roland for us wasting lots of his time yesterday with questions.  The first kit is now ordered so the build should begin around mid March.  Just need a trailer, a van and to get my other car out of the garage so i have the space to build it.
We don't think we will have it finished for stoneleigh but we will be there to meet some of you guys and to see all the new builds, not that you can miss Beany's Banana :)

Anyway, have you not been reading, apparently it's a Bummble Bee!

Look forward to meeting you.

Agree with you splne1. I think people are choosing the 5cudo over the 430 or 360 because of that astonishing exhaust note

I'll be waiting for every post now hehe.

HI Guys

So my cougar arrived back this week and its now time to get started on the prep work,
just a few quick questions for the 5cudo builders out there.
which is the best route to take the battery cable, under the car, through it?
do the bolts on the top to the coilovers need to be screwed all the way down to the end of the screw thread?

cheers guys for any advice, i will take photos today as we go and get them posted up tomorrow.

Hi str00dle,
Make sure you get a really good quality cable as I've had to replace the first I did due to a really bad voltage drop (see my post for details).
I wouldn't advise running the positive cable outside the body as it wouldn't take much to pierce the sheathing and potentially short on the body with catastrophic results. I have however run my earth cable out through the old light apertures in the boot and then between the kit and along the inside of the sills to the engine bay held in place with cable clips, screws and stikaflex.
I drilled through the firewall under the windscreen and came in behind the glove box for the positive, again, make sure you use rubber gromets to prevent the sharp edges cutting the wire.
I bought the 315 from this site...

Cheers for the comments and assistance billywhizz, i have run the cable through the firewall and connected the battery to an existing earth point in the boot, started up first time without any problems so was well happy.
Just got to tidy up the engine bay and a few little jobs before i collect the kit on Thursday.

So here are the pics if anyone notices anything i have done wrong please shout.

It is a little lower than mine I noticed but once you get the new alloys on you'll have a better idea of the height adjustment you'll need. There is a lot of thread on those shocks, when I first put mine on it was like a monster truck as I'd adjusted too far the other way... ;D

So yesterday off I went with the girlfriend and brother in our white van to DNA.  Picked up our kit and all the little bits (there are loads more than I thought) and Brian was awesome spending nearly 3 hours going through each little part for us, not that I can remember much of it now but I’m glad I took a video camera so I can watch it back later to remind me.

Now where can I store all these large bits
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/5cudo%20Build1/5fee677c.jpg)

All the kit is now home, parts in the garage, hallway and conservatory along with the back end just placed over the car as it didn’t fit anywhere else.

So now the real work begins, a big thank you to Brain and all the guys at DNA for the help and advice they have given.

What ya going to do with the Evo thats in the garage??? you keeping it :-\

we can't wait to get going, and the Evo is staying for sure, it has been my other project for the last year and is nearly finished.  The evo is my fuel hungry power car and the 5cudo is my more economical daily driver.

Sorry about the lack of updates everyone, i get so wrapped up in the build i forget to take pictures.
Anyway i did take a few last weekend and yesterday so here is the progress so far.

19th - 20th
doors are on, then line up very well, 2 screws with washers to pack it out hold them on for the time being, 20mins job.

Next up was the windscreen tray which once we cut along the lines was a little aggressive but we can fill the gap without much hassle.

During this time my brother was cutting the vents out of the back end and making the adjustments to get it line up correctly, looked like a ghost by the end of it.

Fitted the black exhaust surround quite early on as its quite flexible and I didn’t want to break it, so screwed it in place.

Next up was to fit the mesh in the scoops, thanks to DE’s build pics I used the idea of cable tying a piece of wood on the outside to hold the mesh in place while I put it on and the glue set.

Sorry no pics of that as i forgot.

On the Sunday I cut them off and fed a cable tie up the drainage hole I had drilled and tied the scoop to the mesh to hold that in place while it set.  While doing this I looked at how to fit the hose at the back and bend it so you can't see the brake lights down the scoops.
Not sure how others have done this but this is how i did it, used a bit of builders strapping and attached in the hose at one end, then pulled it tight till the hose was bent to the correct angle and attached another screw or bolt, then cut the end off.

Put the back end back on and put her all to bed for the weekend. Front end placed on to line bits up but its now to dark and late on Sunday night so that’s the weekend done

Spent week nights doing the door mirrors and headlights (pics coming soon of them)
Title: Re: Str00dle 5cudo Build
Post by: str00dle on March 28, 2011, 11:39:40 AM
26th - 27th (26th was my birthday so only spent half a day working on it)

We made some small changes to the back end to get it seated down perfectly and primed all the areas the kit would touch. Also extended the fuel line and cut the petrol flap area out.

We then got the rear end all bonded on. (thank god, must have test fitted it 30 times, think i'm too picky about getting it just right) here are some pics

We then spent Sunday lining up the front end, fitting the boot on, playing with the boot catch and giving the inside a quick cleanup.

Attached the diffuser late on but its not fitting very well so need to trim some bits down i think.  But really starting to come together now. Here are some final pics for today.

Next weekend will bond the front end on and test aligning the bumper and bonnet. and doing the little things during the week like extending the bonnet catch and playing with the door handles.

Hi str00dle, looking good. I bonded my hose on after the kit was fitted. The bend formed itself by gravity alone and the hose sits snuggly between the Cougar and kit, it's not going anywhere.
Just an observation...what have you used to bond the back end on? It looks 100 times cleaner than mine did at that point, I got the stuff everywhere.

Cheers for the nice comments guys,

billywhizz - i used the stikaflex stuff DNA gave me but don't you worry i did get it everywhere, still on my hands hands today, my only advantage was i used tigerseal which is the same on my evo before so i know what i was in for. still hate the stuff.

beemaman - i did try not to get it everywhere, but there are bits on it all over that the pics don't show. especially the boot area where i picked it up to put it back on before i had wiped my hands.

don't know about paint yet, still seems so much to do but i will ring DNA during the week to book it in, or at least find out what the waiting time is. we are going to try and do all the prep work ourselves to keep the cost down. plenty more weekends gonna be spent sanding down.

Hi str00dle,
I was advised to use fibreglass webbing and resin to bond the back end to the roof line, you might want to check that with DNA :-\
The stikaflex is, as it says on the tin, quite flexible and you don't want the filler to crack with body movement when it's been to the paint shop. Give 'em a ring maybe?

cheers billywhizz your right, i watched the video back i had and brian did say use matt and resin.  not a problem as it was so flexible on the top where it was thin i should be able to bend it up a little and get loads of resin in there.  then i will use some matt to make a good strong bond.

 hey stroodle

if you need any help with info on the bodywork give me a shout,i know its extra cost but if your doing the prep yourselve and there will be plenty of fiberglass dust etc and filler dust it may pay to get a dust extraction machine, they cost around £250 new or maybe pick one up on e-bay for a lot less.saves a lot of dust and mess buddy and really are a godsend buddy,i use one in the workshop and you will be amazed how dust free it is..just a thought lol

so what plans are next on the agenda ......
Title: Re: Str00dle 5cudo Build

cheers beemaman, i will look to do most of the sanding outside as its starting to get warmer now, but the extraction machine sounds like a good idea so i will start investigating, any recommendations on makes etc?

next up is to fix the roof bonding, tweek the front and then bond that on, line up bonnet and boot, and get the door handles all sorted and the doors bonded on.  so plenty to do :)

Hey Guys

Been a while since my last post, don't know how Tenpin finds the time to take so many pics and still get so much work done.  by the time i finish in the evenings its getting dark.
Anyway here it goes, been doing lots of little jobs and lining up of bits, while my brother has been cracking on with the roof.  We are booked in for paint on 28th April so mad rush to get it all finished.
Here is what we have been up to: (sorry for the lack of pics i keep forgetting)
□   Bonnet catch is extended
□   front end is all bonded on
□   bumper and bonnet are nearly aligned perfect
□   Drilled the indicator holes
□   sorted the rear boot bars
□   fitted the gas rams
□   cabled up the 3rd brake light
□   started sanding down the gaps to fit the rear lights
□   drivers door is sorted just tweeking the handle slightly
□   roof fibreglassed and filled (2 days of sanding done so far)
□   windscreen tray in and filled round the edges
□   scuttle panels trimmed to fit
□   trimmed boot window and side pieces

and now here come the few pics i do have.

So another weekend gone and i am shattered, we did 2 full days and this is the progress so far.

We primed the roof to give us an idea of where still needed filling and sanding, but this is a shot from Friday night just after we had primed it.  You will notice in later shots it is filled and sanded again then primed again before hopefully a final sand to make it as flat as 3 bodge it amateurs can manage.

So Saturday and Sunday was spent doing lots of bits in different areas, the drivers door mirror was tweaked to get the best fit and now looks pretty good.

the fuel filler flap was sanded inside and painted a satin black then test fitted again

the gas rams were fitted after the bit by the boot brackets was filled, sanded and primered.

boot is now nicely lining up and you may have noticed the rear lights were fitted as well.

tried to get them all lined up and will do some fine adjusting when it comes back from paint.

also fitted the number plate lights but forgot to take a picture, its only 2 rectangular holes so not too exciting.

and drilled the indicators holes, with some help from the Ferrari website to get them in roughly the correct position.

so now I tried to finish off the back end, mainly the boot, got the Perspex trimmed up and the black side pieces nicely lined up and then test fitted them, its just held in place with some temporary black trim pegs at the moment.

 stroodle

thats good news mate then hopefully next month you will have her back,so originally you were going for red?i think a red one with the right other trim detail colour wil look awesome,im really starting to fancy a red one,and i think the 5cudo is a awesome car in red,one good thing about a solid red as lifestyle said is that you can touch up any pin holes or chips and flat and polish and never see they were there.....either way you will be wetting your pants when its done lol

i saw a red one at dna a few weeks ago, looked the dogs danglys...

After a frantic day of making sure it was all lined up and sanded as best we could the day arrived of going to paint.  Picked up the trailer and on she went........just.  i can't tell you how tight it is getting it on width ways.

so here are a few pics of her ready for the 3 hour drive to paint,  we left at 6.30am on the 28th April

So now the wait, should be about 3-4 weeks which gives us plenty of time to do Engine kit, paint all the black parts and get moved into a garage we are renting.

That was a close shave on getting it on

How you planning on getting her home?

I wouldn't risk trailering her back in case you scratch the paint work loading it on, i recall the lads at DNA saying the best way to transport these cars would be a flat bed truck, better to be safe then sorry i say  ;)

Hey Str00dle you still going with MADMANS RED or you going a different way?

Hey Stroodle,

It was great to meet you, your good lady and brother at the weekend.

These photos bring back memories of just how tight my spider was getting on the trailer. I had to actually place blocks under the wheels at different stages and slowly winch it on.

So where has your car gone for paint? I had mine transported back, with the front bumper removed, using one of Rolands contacts. It was money well spent for peace of mind and actually didn't cost a great deal more than me hiring a trailer again, when you factor in time and fuel.

Can't wait to see it back from the paintshop and on it's way to being finished. So when do you start the second one?

Beany ;D

Hey Replicaman and Beany

was great to meet you at the show beany and your car is awesome, you have done a great job.  Hope ours can look as good.

Our car has gone to DNA for paint, we used Rolands mate Jason to get the cougar back the first time and i did speak to him and Brian at the show about if they can get the 5cudo on the back of transporter.  THey are gonna try with one and if they can i think we will definetly go with Jason again to bring it back to us safe and sound.

We have gone with Madman Red, it was a decision we made a while ago, but with so many Red 5cudos we did start to think would it just blend in with them, but it was pointed out that how many Red 5cudos are where we live and it will only be at shows that we see many.

We have managed to find a garage now to do our car work and hope to move our tools in and get it ready for the car when it comes back, our parents sold their house we used to build this one which made things a little more difficult, and the 2nd one, my one, has been delayed as i had an acident in my mums car a couple of months back and was only covered 3rd party so i have had to buy all the parts and fix her car which has set me back a fair few thousand of the car fund. :(

But it will get done and i have something a little special in mind for my colour, i like to be different and unique, and rest assured it will be carbon wrapped inside wherever i can :)

Hey everyone

sorry for the lack of update but work has been hectic and been trying to spend all the evenings and weekends getting bits ready.
most of the black items just need a final coat now, wing mirrors are pretty much complete, one is fully assembled the other just needs the insides put back in.

Been doing the engine kit, gone with something a little different and its nearly finished so watch this space.

Car is coming back from paint on wednesday and we can't wait.  i am popping to DNA hopefully on Monday so will take some pics so watch out for a bumper pic upload on Tuesday.

all being well hoping to make it to Newark although i doubt it will be fully finished by then but hopefully 95% complete.

Hey Stroodle,

Looking good mate. That's some top wrapping on the engine. Did you use a 3m Primer on that? I need to re-do some of my more complex parts using the primer 94 that i have and should have used in the first place. (Just got too carried away. Lol)

Can't wait to see what other individual touches you are adding.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers for the nice comments guys, they do look lovely in Madman Red i have to admit.
Only 3 days till its back and we cannot wait.

Beany - i used Hexis Carbon Wrap rather than 3m, and i had painted the whole engine first. It sticks best to gloss paint i find.
i will try and get the engine finished over the next few days and then get some pics up.

Hi Mike

No car didn't come home today, due to us not doing the roof well enough it cracked after it had been painted.  It was all our fault and i just feel bad that we have now messed the DNA guys around, they have been brilliant as usual and are gonna fix it for us and then get it re-painted.  Just goes to show once again how good their customer service is.
I am gonna owe all of them a few beers once we get to a show.
Fingers crossed it will be back mid to late next week when bro str00dle is off for 2 weeks to re-assemble the car. Looks very unlikely we will make newark now though.

It was not bonded correctly we did explain it evan wrote on the roof of the car but in haste maybe to get it done it was not as it should have been so to all those reading this make sure the roof is keyed and the under side of the kit and it is bonded using resin and matting and the matting it soaked with the resin as it apears this was completly dry and not bonded fully underneath, not the end of the world its being sorted!

and finally finished the engine kit, i wanted to make it as close to the real one as i could so it has taken a little longer.

Tricky,

The wrap Stroodle has used is called Hexis Carbon Wrap, not the Di-noc 3m that I used.

It's good to see there are now choices for these very versatile products, maybe it will cause pricing to become a little more competative.

Its great to see how different products turn out, i used the Hexis stuff as it is easy to stretch a little and has a good textured feel to it.  Plus its easy to get the air bubbles out as they can usually be gently pushed out the weave.

i cant wait to see what others might do.

So the happy day arrived, i managed to grab a half day so me, bro str00dle and mrs str00dle were all present when big red came home, and what a sight, he looked perfect and we were all so pleased. A huge thanks goes to Roland and Brian for all their hard work and to the paint shop, body shop, Jason and anyone else who was involved in making our beauty.

so here are a few pics

we then did a little work as we couldn't wait to get started, exhaust all on and wrapped, put the exhaust surround on too

also did some side window trim bits and test fitted the engine tray as this was not done before paint and that fitted in very well.

whole weekend ahead now so update to follow.

Hey, looking good! Now onto the finish straight - it's very important that you don't rush this bit (and you have to be extra careful with all that new, shiny and SOFT paint).

I notice you have a small rectangular hole in the centre of the exhaust surround, what's that for? (Maybe a battery connector? - as I'm planning on doing that on mine). On my 3Sixty I routed the trickle / maintenance charger lead out via the exhaust grille (keeping it well away from the exhaust itself!).

looks the dogs dangly bits, love the colour choice  8)
tenpin, I cut hole out same and fit an Anderson plug, (mine has been delivered today from ebay) I fit same thickness leads as battery leads, so you can jump car off or power doors if battery flat, or if not used regular, clip small crocodile clips onto for Accumate (trickle charger, that wont damage alternater etc. while battery still connected) leave it on charge, full battery when needed. I weld a falt sheet of steel to a pair of hinges, paint, then fit numberplate over it. Ideal for spider, if you get a flat battery when raining, you dont need to drop hood, flip no. plate up to jump it off.

2 long days and it feels so good to be putting all the lovely painted parts back on, however it does feel like we haven't got very far.

only pic i remembered to take was me, bro str00dle and mrs str00dle taking a well earned break on the saturday for a healthy lunch of burger king.

I will take lots more pics tomorrow night when i go over and do some more.  but here is what we have got done:
exhaust is all on, exhaust surround is now on, number plate lights are done, diffuser has been trimmed and now fully fitted, third brake light fitted, reflectors fitted, boot stoppers fitted (they line the boot up lovely), rear wheel arch liners put in, rear spacers on, brake discs ready to mount and calipers just need aligning then fixing in place, then on go the wheels :)
other bits we are working on - the engine tray fitment around the gas rams, the interior has all been cleaned thanks to mrs str00dle for working hard on that. also internal aerial, rear view mirror, rear side cards back in, rear seats all in as well.
Basically the aim was to get some of the larger parts on the car to free up some space around the car to work.

Cheers for the feedback guys, to answer the questions:
billywhizz - you should get the stripes, they are not painted they are vinyls that roland stuck on. and the rear grill my brother will spend the week fixing then we will decide paint or carbon surround.

tenpin/madman - good spot, we decided it was the safest option to put a battery connector within easy access. its all fitted now and the numberplate will cover it nicely.

exhaust is all on, exhaust surround is now on, number plate lights are done, diffuser has been trimmed and now fully fitted, third brake light fitted, reflectors fitted, boot stoppers fitted (they line the boot up lovely), rear wheel arch liners put in, rear spacers on, brake discs ready to mount and calipers just need aligning then fixing in place, then on go the wheels :)
other bits we are working on - the engine tray fitment around the gas rams, the interior has all been cleaned thanks to mrs str00dle for working hard on that. also internal aerial, rear view mirror, rear side cards back in, rear seats all in as well.

THAT IS THE LIFE MAN!!!!! EATING BURGERS AND BUIDING FERRARIS!!!!!!!!!!!

I am trying to get my V5 changed to reflect it doesn't look like a ford anymore, has anyone got a contact at the dvla where you get to speak to a person?  I keep getting automated replies and a big phone call cost from my mobile. Any advice welcome?

Hey Everyone

Sorry its been a bit longer than i thought but here is a bumper picture update.
First to answer peoples comments then into the update.

Beemaman - i know how you feel, once we put the brakes on they looked great, then the wheel over the top just makes it all worth while lol.

Dman1409 - Tenpin is correct it is covered up with some grill mesh and then a blanking black piece behind the mesh so you can't see in at all, they are next on my list of things to do on the rear as you will see from the pics.

nmaddock - haven't adjusted the ride height yet, going to get the front wheels on first then get it all set correctly, it currently sits about 10mm higher on one side.   and the brakes sorry i don't have anymore pics of the rears being fitted but i will take some more of the front,  rears where so easy, take the caliper bolts out from the back, mine were rusted to hell but got them out without breaking them, then put the bolt through the bracket and tighten. After that it was just a case of putting the other 2 bracket pieces together and getting them lined up to the disc.  I will take some more pics when i do the fronts, hopefully this weekend.

Now for my update.

It was a long weekend and Bro str00dle was back at work and with misses str00dle ill itwas just me most the time.
Did some really dull bits but you guys all like photos so here you are.

Fitted the rear boot bars
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2419.jpg)

Couldn't resist fitting some of the badges mainly to get them out the way to avoid breaking them, so here is the rear script
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2424.jpg)

Just put the headlight in place to see how it would look, was a real moral booster on a dull rainy day :)

Next up i attacked the interior quarter panels which after a little fight came out nicely.

Front bumper is coming along, just a few little bits i want to tidy up, rear and side mesh to stick on
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2428.jpg)

Engine tray fitted, with the perspex screen. once we had put the boot seal in it did require some convincing but looks good now its in. The rubber seal still needs tidying up at the top which i will do this weekend after a discussion with Bro str00dle
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2435.jpg)

Next up was the Firewall which when i figured out the easy way to get it in the car was a piece of cake, looks good much better than the rubbish pics show, i will put some rubber seal around the edges to finish it off nicely. and as the real one has pockets in the back i decided to put some speakers there instead. the original car had speakers in the parcel shelf rather than the side panels, and i forgot to put them back in the sides, so my idea i had toyed with of putting them in the firewall was made up and i went with the firewall.  I think it looks rather good, i will try and get some better pics later in the week.

After Bro Str00dle fixed the rear mesh panels and spent a week with a dremel trimming them out i got to testing the water with some carbon wrap, i actually amazed myself, i had got 3 pieces lined up for 3 tries if i needed it but first time went better than i could have hoped for. Looks great all stuck well edges need a little tidying up but i am very happy.

Couldn't resist putting some more bits on so despite misses str00dle expecting me home for dinner i put the chrome horse on
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2448.jpg)

which then led to me putting the lights in place for some nice photos to show you
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2451.jpg)

then a race home for some food and much needed rest.

Hey strodle!! IT LOOKS WICKED !!!

LOVE THE CABON! great skill!

Did you fix the speakers permanently allready?
Have some pics for you on speaker details in the f430. think it will be quite easy to make a speaker box  using stretch cloth over a frame..(don't know how this technique is called in English LOL). Also have a pic of an interior with a rollbar in front of the bulkhead... you can put a plastic one in to get an extra detail in there  :P.. just check out the pics..
hope they are usefull to you..

so another weekend gone by and got lots of little bits done but nothing to exciting, this may well be the last update for a while as i am going on holiday on wednesday so i missed the deadline of getting it ready before.

on to the update, a few pics as we had the car out the garage in the sun to turn it around, and i know you like pics

better shot of the interior
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2524.jpg)

rear mesh fitted, not sure how bro str00dle managed to get stikaflex in quite so many places, all up the arms etc.

close up of the rear mesh and a shot of the rear light working, i must say Tenpins wiring guide saves time, pain and hassle and works a treat.  so thanks tenpin.

Ok i can't leave it alone, i was supposed to spend last night packing for my holiday but i skipped packing and went to work on the car, me a bro str00dle put in a late night and got the back end pretty much finished up except for the rear screen which i need to get some primer for as our betaprime dryed up and could break a window :)

so on to the update, my last before holiday.........well maybe

we tidied up the rear mesha dn put the blanking panels in and then stuck the badge on
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_2559.jpg)

as you can see bro str00dle is inside finishing up some bolt tightening, you could store a body under the engine if you wanted!  not that i am putting ideas in peoples head.

and now the moment i have been waiting for, finally the engine try is no longer in my living room and in its rightful place.

and to quote a song........looking back over my shoulder

Hey stroodle,

It just keeps getting better and better. Your car is gonna draw a lot of attention mate.

I can't wait to see the finished article in the flesh.

You and bro stroodle should be very proud of yourselves.

Keep the updates coming.

Regarding registration, I went through the automated DVLA line and eventually spoke to someone who told me what to do.

Write a letter detailing what you have done to the car, including before, during and after photos. Tell them that it is a body panel swap and that no alterations have been made to the structure of the original car. I also put that with the police's numberplate recognition equipment they would be regularly pulling me as what looks like a Ferrari would have shown on their system as an mr2.

After a short while I got a letter saying the local DVLA office would be in touch to arrange an inspection. The guy I saw in peterborough was great had seen plenty of replicas and said that mine I.e DNA's was the best he had seen. He also researched the DNA build process to check the original monocoque was not altered.

If you have any q's pm me and hopefully I can answer them. I could even email you a copy of what I sent them if you like.

Let me know.

Cheers

Beany ;D

You can do that with MR2 but not with Cougar.  :(

Do most people take out the back seats or leave them in there under the fake engine?

This is a very impressive build!  Those extra touches in the faux engine are worth their weight in gold!  You should definitely cut out the flat excess area's though to add a little depth and avoid the reflection that spoils the illusion.

I agree his engine looks great superb. Please start a new thread if you want to discuss the 'other' engine or what you might do to the DNA one to give it more 'depth'.

Hey Guys

Sorry there has been no updates, i have just got back from holiday and will get some up shortly.  Bro Str00dle has been working away with the headlights and little bits so it is close to being finished now, just waiting for some new brakes to be fitted before we fit the fake front brakes.

good news is we will definetly be at Stafford.

to cover off the fake engine once and for all here are my thoughts.
Cutting the bottom pieces out in my opinion would make the engine very weak to keep lifting it up and down, once its all together it is quite heavy. and if you are using it as a boot and you would be able to see the crappy cougar boot interior and the rear seats foldered down through the holes.

Each to there own on how far you want to go but i believe you have to draw the line somewhere, the more you cut out the more you have to build underneth and before you know it you have a full fake engine and no boot space.  But i do respect that some people are not interested in having a boot and i look forward to seeing how they come out.

I think DNA is much better than most on the market and they had to stop somewhere and i think that got it spot on, we will continue to make small tweaks to make each one personal but they have to think about manufacturing costs.

Now back to the car, i will get some pics during the week and get them uploaded asap

2 quick questions for the 5cudo building guys,

what have people been doing with the front indicators as the exisiting bulb etc is too big?

also does anyone have any good rubber selant strips, i was thinking of trying to finish the front headlights off nicely with something like the seal you get round the windscreen.  I thought someone on here did something but i couldn't find the thread.

any ideas we would welcome

Hi stroodle,
I used a neoprene half round seal bonded to the return of the lens, it helps hold the lamp in place in the wing opening to stop any light wobble and it looks the part too...
here's where I got it from, can't remember the size I got though, sorry.

Hey guys,
sorry for the delay but tings have been busy since i got back from holiday. and little jobs on the car have been taking an extra long time.  But here we go with a big bumper update.

Changed the front brake pads and discs before we cover them up with the fake discs and calipers.

Bro Str00dle fitted all the front headlights and scuttle side pieces while i was on holliday.  He also fitted the windscreen wipers and door handles.

Then recently the front brakes and wheels went on, along with the wheel arch liners

The Drivers side wing mirror went on, passenger side will be done once it is out the garage as its such a tight fit.

Next up was the rear screen, scotched it back round the edge and painted the primer straight on it, looks great after a few coats and then had it tinted with a very light shade.  came out very well so used loads of stikaflex and on it went along with the edge pieces, plenty of clamps and also put 6 large head rivets in to hold it on very securely.  Was going to stick the tops of the caps DNA provide in the kit over the top of the rivet but the rivets look nice on their own so not sure now.

Plenty more stikaflex on the underside of the black side window peices just to tidy up the underside.  and this is the result.

Front bumper was also put back on and bolted in place
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_3142.jpg)

Next up was the rear quarter pieces which after a little thinking we found a way to hold them in place to stick over night.

end result was better than expected
(http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll152/str00dle_photos/IMG_3151.jpg)

and finally we had the steering wheel parts back from being flocked

and all connected up

this weekend may get a little more done before hopefully its first test drive when its not hammering down with rain.

i got the wheel componant bits from DNA, and then you need an MR2 MK3 wheel, a start button and thats it.

How much were the component parts from DNA?
Do you need a boss adaptor to get the wheel to fit the Cougar?

That wheel must have come from an SMT car! - It'll have "UP" buttons on the other side.

Hey Tenpin, it did come from an SMT car but was a bargin, the DNA steering back piece covers the up buttons anyway, i was thinking about making the down buttons do something though.

Billywhizz - the componants weren't that expensive, best give them a ring for latest prices, and you don't need a boss but you do have to butcher the back of the cougar wheel and mount it to the mr2 wheel thus creating a boss kit.  Not difiicult bro str00dle did ours.

Now for a small update, took the drivers wing mirror off and took her out the garage for some 95% complete pics which i thought i would share with everyone.

Very nice job Stroodle Bros!

I love the satin black on the mirrors. Another top example.

The second will be a breeze after building this one.

You know you are going have to make it even better aswell. lol.

Bro Stroodle is in for some questioning when he drives this to work for the first time. I certainly got my fair share. It was hilarious.

Are you going for the full interior? I am sold on the flocking Flocking by the way, i think it's the way forward. I have been toying with the idea of stripping my interior out over the winter and sending it away. We'll have to see.

Keep us posted.

Beany ;D

replicaman - i will take a look at the wheel tonight for you and let you know.

Beany - cheers mate, second one is being put on hold to sort some bits out but when we do it of course we will try to make it better, got a couple of little ideas, more carbon for a start lol.
Not sure about interior yet, gonna take it to see my flocking guy and hammer out some ideas we have.

Thanks for the nice comments guys, can't wait to hopefully see you all at the shows.

So it was time for the maiden voyage out, and it couldn't have been scripted better.

We drove downt he road and after a mile and a bump in the road noticed the front calipers catching the discs so pulled into a pub to take them off, next thing a guy has popped over and doesn't believe us that its fake so the usual proving its not real proceeds.  Then while chatting to him a real F430 cruises pasts and gives us a honk a wave making all of us smile with joy, if only he knew lol.

After that smooth sailing back home and here are a few pics, more to follow of our adventures out and hopefully some videos in the future.

Well done Str00dle, it looks incredible! Happy to hear the Maiden voyage was a success. I think next up should be a hidden cam video to watch people's reactions and disbelief that it is a DNA lol.

Hey StrOOdle, the car looks the business, you should give yourself a big pat on the back, you have put allot of effort into the detail and it shows,
but that number plate is pants, it has to go, have you got a private plate and just not transferred it yet. ::)

WOOOWW!!!

The more I come on here the more I need this kit in my life!!!!!!!!!!!



Best colour and stripes are awesome!!!

The only gripe I have is the wheels !!
The 'stance' of the car isn't very Ferrari like, think the wheels need pushing a little bit more out and dropped to close the gap in the arch?
Does anyone else think that?!

Ate those 18" or 19"

Also what is the width?

Top job guys?!

How long has this build took you?!

And was it as straight forward as you though??

The StrOOdle's ferrari looks amazing, bet your well chuft, its a true credit and a fast build too!

Ayaz, I see where your comming from with the wheels but if you look more closely when the wheel is straight the arch looks filled, when the wheels are turned the suspension twists lifting the arch slightly.

Also you need to consider the more you bring the front wheels out the worse it will corner and the more likly it is to foul the arch.

I think the wheels look great, You would be hard pushed to tell its a fake!

Certainly!! Very good replica ad done perfectly aswell!

Just the wheels is the ONLY gripe about these replicas
The stance in which the car sits?! I can see your point In wheel fouling the arch but I'm sure some arch mods would cure that?

Are these 18" wheels? What width are they?

I think if you lowered it a touch more from the front would look perfect! Or would that be too low for the speed bumps?
What's the original height for the 430 from bottom of the bumper? An what height on this? Does anyone no.

Either way I envy you!!! 

It's perfect! And you made it look effortless!!! Well done guys!! 

True credit to DNAs kits!

Are you gonna be at Stafford kit car show?! Really wanna see this!

Bishlee - how can you not like our GOO mobile numberplate lol, we are planning to change it in the future to a personlised one don't worry.

Ayaz - cheers for the comments, to answer your questions as best i can, the wheels are 19" scuderia replica ones and are awesome, pics don't do them justice. i will get the tyre sizes for you over weekend as replicaman wants to know too.

the build took us about 6 months, longer than planned but due to house move and some unforseen issues along the way it took longer that would have normally, it was funny building it as the bits i was concerned about were easy and some of the other bits harder, but DNA were always on the end of the phone 7 days a week it seemed.

the front is currently quite high on the suspension as we have a large bump getting out of our unit, we will lower it slightly more and the wheel will fill the arch like the rears do. you can't make the wheels any wider other wise they would stick out from the arches.

I believe the real F430's nose can be raised and lowered for speed bumps

We hope to make the stafford show and i can't recommend enough that you go and see the DNA ones and chat to the guys as well as all us owners that will be there.  and make sure you hear the sound they make, it sold us straight away. :)

Hi Str00dle,

I see your car is for sale on gumtree and after reading through the whole build process i definately want to come and view it.

Could you shoot me an email or reply on Gumtree to organise a viewing- or is it someone else selling it?

Kindest regards,
Don
