Title: Wheel spacers
Post by: STRDAL360 on August 30, 2015, 07:42:44 AM
Hi,

Can someone tell me if wheel spacers are used in the West Coast build?

If so, what size?

Cheers

Yes hub extenders are used on the West Coast.  The fronts are only about 20mm but the rears are quite big, about 2.5" a side.  Sorry I'm mixing my dimensions but it's the bi-lingual way I think.  :-)

"Spacers " normally imply that a "spacer" is slid over the existing or longer studs.  It also includes those with an arrangement that screwed on to the existing studs to " make them longer" to accept the spacer.  This was very prone to breakages.
The DNA hub extenders use the existing studs to bolt them to the hub and these extenders carry the new wheel studs or bolts.   Much more reliable and DNA say that they don't know of any bearing failures caused by this method.

Of course the other way to get around this is by using wheels with greater negative offset, instead of using spacers/extenders. This will also give the wheels that deep-dished look which some like, including myself.  ;)

Have you got some nice example wheels that can be used on SL, MADMAN?

Hi Strdal 360

I know it's a bit late answering this post, but I thought I would for anybody else wanting to know about wheels spacers on West Coast.
I have Hamann Mercedes wheels on my West Coast. They are 20 inch deep dish.
the major problem, you cannot use West Coast spaces But if you speak to Brian he will get them specially made for you, and also you can not fit dummy ceramic brakes, because of the deep dish wheels being too near the dummy brake calipers.

These are all things to think about when you're choosing wheels, but madman and I think dish wheels look great.

JJ. As you know I'm having a bit of a learning curve with 3D printing.  Browsing through "Thingiverse" the other night I found 3D printed spacers.  WHAT ? I thought.  I hope no body actually uses these, but there are some stupid people arround.

Hi Mick

you could make some wheel spacers for toy cars, have a good one driving with the roof down.

Hi, johnjames, thanks for your post.

I also like the deep dish look and that's the look I would be going for myself, rather than using spacers. Although it is true that your choices of wheels would be more restricted.

I am aware that some countries have strict regulations on the size of spacers, such as Australia and New Zealand, and the dish wheels get around that problem.

Hi Strdal 360.
With a West Coast you have to be careful which wheels you buy, you have to go for the right stud pattern, although my wheels are deep dish the deep dish is on the outside of the wheel, so the inside is not it is smaller the spacers on my wheels are 75 on the rear and 35 on the front. If you go for a deep dish in the middle you might have a problem when you turn the front wheels that it catches on the bodywork. If you go to,    (a funny thing happened when)   and then look at  (flat tyre)    you will see a bit more information about my wheels and tyres not sure if this helps, or if it's more confusing.

Also whereabouts do you live and are you building a West Coast ?

Hi, johnjames,

Thanks for the info on deep dish wheels. I own a 5cudo with deep dish wheels sourced by DNA. The car was built by DNA as well. I'm in the planning stage of purchasing a donor SL for my West Coast project. I will most likely consult DNA about the choice of wheels without spacers when the time comes.

I'm from down under (Australia).
