Flocking Brilliant
« on: April 13, 2017, 11:19:08 PM »
Guys,

I've just picked up my rear bins from a guy near J29 off M1 who does 'Flocking'...

To say I'm impressed is an understatement, they are just brilliant, and I can't recommend him highly enough.

Plus he's on Facebook as 'FlockingFantastic'

Pictures do not do them justice, I'll try and get better pictures outside tomorrow

Lee.  I must disagree, I think the pictures do give a good indication of the quality.  An intense, all absorbing black, not gray.  It's another "small" part  that contribute to the overall effect.
Not all problems can be solved with gaffer tape.  For those there is WD40.
Not even gaffer tape can fix stupid, but it can mask the sound.

If you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

Thanks Furruri

Getting rid of the Toyota plastic is a must as it's proper nasty.
Still a few bits to do, but getting there.

Anyone interested, just Facebook message him or let me know, and I'll pass on his mobile number

I know it's not your intention to get the car wet but I found that if I got it wet, rain or washing, with the front lower than the back I got water in the rear luggage lockers.   Adopting the principle that if you can't stop it getting in make sure it can get out I drilled a few 3mm holes in the lowest points of the base.  Same with the front locker I also flocked.  If it gets wet the flocking may stain.

I'm confused again Furruri.....

1) getting my car wet.. :o (WHAT...! Wash your mouth out)

2) water only gets into the rear bins when the pockets above the bins have either been cut to shreds (Normally by a butcher like Sha, or the drain holes are blocked, not allowing the water to escape and then overflow into the bins.

3) flocking is used on wheels, helmets, bonnets and all sorts of exterior and under bonnet parts, so can't see how you can say it discolours, wears or looks bad after getting wet (see pictures below from 'Flocking Fantastic'

My apologies for even considering your car being near precipitation.  However the comment still applies to washing it.
Yes blocked drain holes can be a problem if they aren't cleared once in a while.  Always have been, always will.  Major problem on the SL, if they block you get water in the boot, flood the boot and damage the vacuum and hydraulic pumps.
That flock looks very good.  In the old days if it got wet it stained, things must have improved.

Things have definitely changed in the past few years on flocking, from what I've heard and seen.
I must admit I was amazed to learn that people flock wheels and external items of their cars.

Washing car with water? No, I'm still confused... my car never gets dirty enough to need any more than merguiers detailing, or a damp microfibre cloth every time she comes home to her cosy garage.

I'm looking forward to treating my baby in the same way.

Well worth every penny Steve..
I'll get some pictures when they are in the car, but unfortunately due to the new Ferrari speaker that clamps to the bins, I have to remove that before I can even look at adding the bins to the car.
So hopefully I'll get this done in the next few days ;D

I think the spare wheel din is the next item to get done, as that's just horrid in the plain Toyota plastic

Lee.   I moved the alarm to the space next to the radiator where the air con fan fits and had mine flock sprayed.

Yes, I thought of that... but then... If by any chance I do catch a wet road (god forbid)..... the water may get into the alarm? Even if I face it backwards???!?!?

That's for another day, but just got the bins installed..
now for re-fitting the Ferrari speaker.

Then just awaiting on the trimmers to send back my cupboard doors that's are getting padded and leathered...
So happy days  ;D

Here's a 'before' original bin in front of the flocked bins

No competition, the Toyota plastic is just horrid on all levels

I never had a problem with my alarm due to it getting wet.   If you are worried about it how about a plastic bag and gaffer tape and mount it with any openings pointed downwards.

Not if it's done neatly.  I ran my mini for several seasons with a bag and tape over the distributor and had no problems even in the most appalling mud and some deep water splashes.  All you had to do was turn the cooling fan off if the water was more than 9" deep to save it spraying water around the engine bay. ( and remember to turn it back on afterwards)
My mate ran his dragster with a plastic bag and tape over the battery, insisting it complied with FIA regulations as it was a non conductive, leak proof container.
