Steering wheel
« on: October 18, 2014, 05:03:47 AM »
Hi, guys,

Has anyone figure out what to do with the SL500 steering wheel?

Is it possible to bypass the Mercedes wizardry and swap it for a later SL model 3-spoke design one?

i think general opinion is to keep the merc wheeel and just put a few touches on it to make it more ferrari like - centre badge and a retrim/paint black etc... there are more electronics in that wheel than the whole of the MR2 probbably  :) so removing would cause the owner all sorts of headaches. i think a replacement merc one would be loads of dosh as well and not worth the spend. the interior of the SL is lovely as it is and as we know, most people don't know what the inside of ferrari look like, as long as it looks nice that's all that matters!  :)

Paul.
I covered this in Furrari Build.
A new (three spoke) wheel is £500 off eBay.  Then you will need a new clock spring ( the bit that allow the wiring to rotate with the wheel).  Probably a new loom.  The total is about £1200.  That's before you started with the canbus problems.
I would love a less Merc wheel but it's just not feasible.
Sorry mate.

Not all problems can be solved with gaffer tape.  For those there is WD40.
Not even gaffer tape can fix stupid, but it can mask the sound.

If you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

Thanks, guys.

Can someone also tell me which years SL500 can be used as a donor and if other SL models can also be used for the build? This might have been covered before but buried somewhere deep in the chats so I thought some clarifications here would help the new builders-to-be.

Cheers

Very roughly 2002-2006, basically the R230 model designation is what it was designed for, though..... Ideally you'd want a SL500 or above, lower versions don't / may not have the adjustable ride height. Things like the SL55 AMG model would make a very good choice.
Mine is based on a SL500.

If you also read SL Revelations it will give you an idea of the features you can expect in the SL.

Thanks, guys.

Would be nice to find a SL55 for this project if the kit would fit. The extra grunt would give your car the edge that it needs for make-believe. I had an encounter on the motorway yesterday where a couple of boy racers in their cars wanted a race with my 5cudo. Didn't know what mods they got on their cars but I
know mine is a just a stock Cougar V6. So in case I embarrass myself I didn't race them but gave them the snob instead.
