Thank you tricky for the information I can't believe your the only one that has registered his car with the DVLA,

So all the rest of you guys who are on the road are driving a car registered as a BMW Z3 ?

Hi JJ, Yep, mine is still registered as a Z3 at the moment....I will change it, but only after I have completed the interior, because at the moment it still looks like a Z3 with a body change, which is what it is....but with the new interior it should look different enough to be registered as something else.

I would change it now rather than later. If Plod ping your number plate it will show as a Z3 which even Plod should realise is wrong. Probably not a fine but never good to get a tug.
Also at the moment it is simple and quick to get the V5 changed, knowing DVLA they will probably change this just to make it more awkward and tricky to do.

Can you get this change done mid way through a build, or does the car have to be roadworthy? Mine is at the paint shop now, but will be several months before it is ready, as I start the interior when it comes back.

I'd say wait until it's completed, then you can show photos of before and after etc. The DVLA are used to build from scratch kits, rather than re-panel kits and their forms reflect this, so "if you haven't completed it how can you say what part you've used?" On mine, and others that I know about it's been done after an MOT - hence the MOT station have MOT'd it as the donor car, so maybe that reassures DVLA that all is well?
If it can be MOT'd when it's back from paint, without interior (i.e. depending on whether you've removed the dash, dials etc.), then why not get it MOT'd and send the forms off to DVLA for re-registration? Send me a PM at that point and I'll help with the forms etc.

Thanks Tenpin.

It won't be 'MOT-able' after paint, as I stripped out the interior and dashboard in preparation for the next phase, so I guess it will need to be a fully finished item before I go through the document change process.

I had a MOT in my GTM when it was incomplete.  The bits missing where shown on the advisory.  One item missing was the passengers seat, but the seat belt was still tested to stop you getting round a faulty seat belt by taking out the seat.

Don't know if this is relevant to your point, but I might be.
Not all problems can be solved with gaffer tape.  For those there is WD40.
Not even gaffer tape can fix stupid, but it can mask the sound.

If you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

My 250 was also incomplete when I got it MOT'd.

It had no external door handles and the boot had to be opened with a piece of wire tied to the latch.

But, because I spoke to them about these things before I took it in, they were fine about it.

It is at the testers discretion, they said...so if you are decent to them......

Took my car for MOT Monday had a guy at the MOT station told me that he couldn't MOT it because it's a BMW Z3 and it hasn't got airbags so therefore it will not pass. Lucky for me I belong to the Kent Kit Car Club and was told of a garage that will MOT kit cars so took it there and it passed. But still have a big list of things to do I had fixed the headlights but not put the covers on that's my job tomorrow or Friday so we'll post some pictures over the weekend I hope. Will post the pictures on John James 250 GT

Airbag - I think the rule is a lights has to go on to check the system & then go off to report no faults.
Mine failed on the 1st attempt & we had to add a light to show the system worked - no airbag mind you!

I had the same conversation earlier in the year with my MOT tester, he said he couldn't pass it as a Z3. I had taken the new V5 with the car listed as a "Tribute California 250"
As it was now not registered as a Z3 they were happy to pass it with no air bags or warning lights fitted.
