That's it thanks. Interstate this week and scant PC access so trying to find stuff on my phone is a pain. Thanks!

My research has revealed that the "genuine" Nardi steering wheel will cost over $3,000AUD. GULP!v Some fool on ebay is claiming to have an NOS one .... that's $5000AUD. It is certainly a Nardi but part of the Nardi replica range ... it is the correct item - just not from 1960.

Alternatives are available and the Aussie distributor has shown me a version I love and at around $600AUD far closer to my budget - note though, that a hub would have to be made and a centre horn button purchased, which adds considerably to the affair.

Here is the Nardi ANNI (50 or 60)

The 50 has smooth spokes, riveted woodwork and signature of the designer

The 60 sports a guilloche spoke treatment somewhat similar to the genuine

And here is the (as told to me - don't shoot the messenger) 1:1 replica of the one used in the California.

here's what I believe to be the original wheel   -   interestingly (perhaps only to me) it seems the LWB may have had a slotted wheel.

And here is a detail of the wheel

And if you wanted to go insanely vintage you could use this :D

Just imagine how hot this'd look in a cream California with red trim and bone piping/detailing!

I went for a Nardi Classic 390mm (5061.39.3000) - On cost grounds

I'm aware mate :) the Aussie importer picked your wheel immediately. He was blown away by your car. ... and he is looking into importing the window electrics.

By the way, my research dug up a 250GT SWB with a slotted Nardi wheel. I think there were numerous variations on the theme.

Yep - every 250 is slightly different. Looks like customer could change a lot more back then.

I'm keen to get feedback regarding people's preference of engine and year model of Z3.

I can't help thinking the 2.8 variant would be best but I have to be honest and say I know nothing about the different engines' positive/negative characteristics. There are plenty of 1.9s here but I just couldn't bring myself to build a Cali with a four under the bonnet. The 2.2 might be a possibility too.

More research required. :)

Seriph.
Although in this country an IVA IS not required, if it was you would fail if you had a steering wheel with holes in, but your OK with a slotted wheel; presumably so you can't get your fingers stuck.

Strange but true.

Not all problems can be solved with gaffer tape.  For those there is WD40.
Not even gaffer tape can fix stupid, but it can mask the sound.

If you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

Some regulations are just Crazy!

In answer to the questions regarding engines. My 2.8 has more than enough power, any more would be pointless (so I wouldn't bother with a 3 or 3.2). I hear the 2.2 is also fine, Tricky could give you more on that.

I went for the 2.8 as the stats were very close to the original V12 - OK it may be missing 6 pots.

The 2.2 may give a closer engine note than the 2.8, while the 2.8 sound great & very retro it is too deep to be the V12.

Go for the one with the power.  If it's too much put some carpet under the loud pedal.

''Tis what I usually do. One thing is certain. I won't be buying a "dog." Engine choice is potentially the only real consideration ... and chassis condition (previous damage) of course. I'm going to meet local Z3 owners over time and deepen my knowledge of the vehicle's quirks and foibles. I am also going to need to get hold of a Z3 instrument cluster to assess for modification to emulate the original and thereby enable full integration with the Z's systems. Doubt that'll be economically viable but it'll be great to know.

Of course, if the repro speedo and tacho are reasonably priced, I'll have no real need to bother. Just haven't priced those yet.

2.8...I got mine to get performance close to the original 250....nobody cares about the difference in sound when you overtake them   ;D
If Airfix plastic model planes are made exactly to scale, why don't they fly?
