Title: New Build - 430 Spider V6 3.0Ltr
Post by: Lee22 on May 29, 2017, 08:20:52 PM
Evening all,

So most of you will know that I'm building a 430 Spider, but this time it's in red.

This car I won't be holding onto as the wife has put her foot down and told me I must sell it once it's complete.
I won't be scrimping on the build at all, and my ideas are to have this car looking amazing within a few months.
There are lots to do, as all the interior (and I mean all) has been stripped out, and is getting renewed.

The engine is coming out too and all getting tidied up.

More pictures to follow when jobs get done, but keep an eye on this page if you're interested in (what will be a beautiful car)....

Been lucky enough to see this car every weekend up north  (19 weekends in a row, mad I know) when working on my car. This 430 is and will be a stunner when finished  :o It's been stripped and rebuilt the correct way with nothing overlooked. I know lee won't let it go until he is 100 percent happy with it. Whoever the new owner will be they will have one very nice car. Just wish I could justify two cars :'(

Thanks Mark

So the build is continuing and picking up pace

Rear deck has been fully aligned
New roof has been refitted
Doors have been lined, all wires now correctly fitted included the door mirrors as these were never connected and didn't work.
Stereo speakers fitted inside the door cards for better sound and door cards fitted
Old rubbish water bottle has been removed and an original new MR2 bottle (sprayed black) has been placed back into its correct position.
New rear mesh is being fitted
Lots of cleaning and Painting under the bonnet.

So lots done, but lots more to do

I'll post more pictures as I continue with this build

I'm chuffed just to see another 430 in work and brought up to a condition in which it should be.

Great stuff Lee.

Hi Steve

Yes it seems like you and me on builds currently.
Although mine is a 're-build'.

Hope yours is progressing as you would expect too...

It's all worth the time, money and when you have a run out to a show, like yesterday and the majority of people love the work that has been done  ;D

Good evening all

So the build is continuing and picking up pace

A massive thanks to Mark for all his help so far.. it really helps having 2 pairs of hands on the projects  ;D

Obviously a great thanks to Barry too, for allowing me to use his unit to build this second car of mine..

Hopefully the main build will be done soon, and attention can then be focused on the underside and the engine.

Lee.  I notice you say majority.  Why are there some people who can't accept them for what they are.  A replica, yes.  Still a great piece of work and a credit to their builder.

There are always a few people that don't like what we do

MR2 people spring to mind
And Ferrari people also....  ;D

But if is surprising how many people walk away with a disgusted look when you tell them it's a replica.

But I've stopped caring..!
It use to bother me, but not any more.. I love my DNA 430's and no mater what anyone has to say about them.

Lee.  That's the bit I can't understand.  If you like it, why should that change when you find out it's a replica.

The ONLY thing those pricks can say is "hey everyone, look what I bought!"

You get to say "look what I built"

End of story.

I've had courteous dealings with the Mr2 boys/girls, all have been pleasant comments and genuine interest.
I can also understand the 'replica' stigma attached to all owners, I suppose until the heckler owns/builds a kit car they'll never understand the joy and frustration of owning one.

Sorry for the lack of pictures
The car is coming on well, but not wanting to rush this rebuild.

Interior and seats are looking smart, but having to make some seat brackets / runners for the seats to fit into the car, as the seats are not MR2

Pictures next weekend  ;D

Looks good Lee has it got an ally flywheel already or will u b putting one in? I guess u have driven it already but doesn't it make u want a V6 in yours?
Title: Re: New Build - 430 Spider V6 3.0Ltr
Post by: Lee22 on September 30, 2018, 03:43:48 PM
Not driven it, to be honest.

I’m not adding the flywheel, as the costs are running away as it is, and the new owner won’t pay more because I have done upgrades.
It’s costing enough to upgrade to all Bc coilovers, new clutch, timing belts, gaskets, water pump, etc etc etc etc

I’ll be lucky to cut even on the build at this rate  :o

For mine, I’m looking at Turbo charging the 1ZZ, as it gives remarkable power, and a fraction of the cost....

So

A bit of work done today on the red 430

We noticed that when ‘Woodsport’ has fitted the 3.0 V6, the engine mounting on the chassis was made too big, and the engine has been banging on the mounting  :o

As you can see from the first picture to the second, we have had to reduce the size by a fair amount.

You may also notice that I’ve had to rub a lot of the red paint off the engine bay....
When the engine bay has been painted, the person doing it (I presume Woodsport again), did not scotch pad the original blue paint, and just sprayed over it with red  :(
It’s not taken long for all this paint to be flaking off.... aaarrrggghhh

So now having to scratch off all the red paint on the engine bay, ready to make it good for etch primer and proper paint next weekend.

And second job yesterday was to sort out the chassis where the rams for the deck fit.

When the car was first built, the builder had placed the rams on the wrong side of the chassis, and because of this, the rams were not straight and didn’t work correctly..
But, the big problem was the amount of damage the rams did the chassis, with them being located on the wrong side, and pulling.

This (over time) has weakened the chassis in this area and snapped part of the box section off the main rail..

There’s a fair amount of panel beating to get them back flat, Barry took to the welder and welded 2 flat plates across the weak sections to put the strength back in.
A little bit of body filler to make it look nice and smooth.

Now ready for etch primer and paint.

I was going to start this post with the words : ‘a little work done today’...

But to be honest, it’s been a full day for both me and Barry.

Again looking at the previous work done on this car, we knew the gearbox had been painted (badly), as some of it was flaking off, due to NO undercoat / primer, and cheap black paint being used straight onto the aluminium box.

So we set too, scraping the black paint off the gear box, so we could ‘Acid8’ prime the box and paint it properly on a nice metallic silver.

So after 8 and a 1/2 hrs of scraping and rubbing, we’ve almost got the gear box clear of this horrid black paint.

I didn’t take a picture of the box almost paint free, but the ones below will give an idea of the work done.

Ok

Day two on the super exciting scratching of the gear box  ::)

Think I’m nearly there now (thank goodness)

Plus, got other bits back from the powder coaters too and looking good.

Luckily I’ve got a long way forward now, just the engine block to start now  ::)

If it's so stuck on that a wire brush won't fetch it off why spend days scratching it off with a screw driver ?  There must be a bonding primer that will make it even stronger ?  Its aluminium........... they are not painted as new from the factory and it's not like it's going to rust ?

Please, tell me the size of the metal base for attaching the door handle please. 1, 2 and 3 size on the photo!

Hi

I can’t help you I’m afraid, as it was a couple of years back when mine was done, and I can’t get to it to measure it, as the cars been painted.

So unless someone has written the measurements on their build thread, like Paul79, you may just have to pay, with trial and error..

Sorry I can’t help

Evening all,

Sorry I haven’t posted on here for a while, but to be honest I’ve been busy with the family and other things, but Barry has been working like a mad man achieving the below:

- So, engine bay has been fully rubbed down, etch primed and gloss black finished.
- The gearbox painted, new seals and ready for connecting back to the engine, after all that horrific black sticky paint was removed and the aluminium was cleaned.
- New callipers bought and painted
- Engine stripped (almost completely) and rebuilt, swapping all gaskets and seals, belts, tensioners, sensors, alternator, plugs, clutch, water pipes, etc etc etc....
- All pipes have been changed to new and clips have been renewed also.
- All nuts and bolts have been cleaned, acid dipped, and iodised in gold / rainbow effect.

As you can see from the last picture, you can see the detail of the finish of this engine rebuild.!

The throttle body was a head scratcher, as the previous owner / engine builder had decided it was a good idea to spray paint it all black matt, including INSIDE the butterfly :o
What a mess..!

To manually clean this and paint / Lacquer would have been quite an intricate job, so we decided to send it away for ‘Aqua blasting’’.

Which I’m sure you will agree has made it come up looking like new...

So all that was needed was a good covering of clear Lacquer.

Decided to go for the same metallic dark grey as the mirrors, wheels, splitter and diffuser, to keep everything keyed together.

Lack of pictures due to being busy, but work has progressed

Engine in
Exhaust has been built, but had to fit the cat in
Started on the interior, but lots to do

Long way to go, but moving forward well 👍🏻

Well, after running out of Mig wire for the welder this morning 😱 and having to shoot out for a new reel.
Barry managed to get the full exhaust welded up.
All new welds have been made smooth with the die grinder, and the full exhaust has now been fully painted again with HVT exhaust paint 👍🏻👍🏻
Just waiting for it to dry and it can be installed back in the car and heat shields made for the cat and the back box.
Title: Re: New Build - 430 Spider V6 3.0Ltr
Post by: Lee22 on February 15, 2020, 08:55:21 PM
So, after a lot of lifting up and down and loosely bolting in to check it fits, then changing it again and again, we have eventually, successfully fitted the exhaust to the car.

Can’t believe we had to remove the rear engine mounting that connects the gear box to the fire wall, as this was blocking access to bolt the exhaust together.. :o

So modified the engine mounting too so access can be gained now without removing it, in the future  ;D

So exhaust fitted all the way to the tips

Just the heat shields to make and fit now, and that’s the exhaust finished.  :D
