Yeah, half my time was spent second guessing and triple checking against "what-ifs" and the other three-quarters was spent trying to get the ****** nuts and bolts undone! - tenpin

Hi, looking at your pics, I guess you US guys are going to have an extra challenge compared to us right handers. It looks like the front bin will get in the way of moving the screen washer bottle filler spout. It has to be moved towards the middle of the car, otherwise you won't get access to it when you put the front section of the kit on. Perhaps you knew this already, or I'm not looking straight at your photo. Good luck with the suspension etc - mine took me several weekends! - tenpin

Hey guys!  Look if deftspyder is catching up Munkyking on his build, does that mean I should start taking days off work so I can stay ahead of both of you? (Or perhaps I should post some misleading replies - what a wicked thought - no I couldn't do that!) Thinks about it....actually if the two of you get ahead of me then you can point me in the right direction at times - sounds much better! - tenpin

Hi, get your hand behind the panel and twist the release whilst pushing it toward the part thats in the filler area - it then simply comes apart. I'm at work right now, but if nobody else steps in and answers before, when I get home I'll take a photo of the bits which should help you see how it comes apart (whilst still allowing you to put it back together!) - tenpin

Another weekend - another post. So this weekend things went well! I cut the holes for the lights in the headlamp holder. (both left and right hand pieces). And long overdue I glassed in the bolts that hold the rear bumper. - that was Saturday. I really should have taken my phone off the hook - I'd just started mixing the P40 and hardener and thought what would be the worst time for the phone to ring? some time about now..... and thats what it did!
Sunday - a friend came round and we took the rear section down from my makeshift mezzanine level in the garage - it was high enough so I could drive an MR2 underneath - keep the kit in there and still use the garage. Having dropped on the rear section (less bumper) we spent a fair amount of time aligning it and then checking that it was central, or was it centered and the car off-centre? Anyway we finally decided that it was OK - we'd dropped on the front section to see how it looked and dropped a door skin on as well (can I drive it now please?) and it was time to bond the rear section to the car. We'd checked that the front and rear sections lined up and drilled the holes for the bolts and glassed them in, so time for the bonding. Although it was another of those "moment of truth" moments (there seem to be a lot of them when building a car) it all seemed to go well, but time (or next week's posting) will tell.
We'd also played with the front bucket and the bonnet catch, more on that another time, next weekend maybe.

When I did mine I pointed the "jump off and hit something expensive before getting irretrievably lost" end into a large cardboard box, which seemed to keep all the bits in roughly the same place. Overall it was nowhere near as exciting as I thought it might have been!  tenpin

The flat piece of metal with a hole bolts inside the rear bumper using the upper bumper bolt - this leaves the threaded rod sticking out to use as a hanger for the new exhaust. I've temporarily fitted mine re-using the existing exhaust rubbers until I see where they really need to go once the back is on the car. Hope that helps.

This weekend - plan was to cut track rod ends, beat the living daylights out out the seams in the front wheel arches, remove the existing exhaust and loosely position the new one.
The bolts that held the exhaust to the cat were corroded into their nuts and were not going to shift, no room to get the angle grinder in, so it had to be hacksaw time. Surprisingly, not too much trouble and it came free. Avid readers will remeber that I bought replacement bolts for the front lower arms - the old ones now found a use - they were long enough to take the springs from the exhaust bolts and allow me to clamp the the new exhaust back to the cat. I cut off the ends of the rear bumper and a quick call to DNA later, I had discovered what those odd two bits of metal rattling around on one of the exhaust hanger brackets were for!
I cut off the ends of the track rod, covering the remaining thread with masking tape, then the locking nut. The masking tqpe acted as a cutting guide and also stopped metal filings getting into the thread. I then filed round the end of the cut before removing the tape. Checked that all was well, by undoing the nut, didn't even need to use a spanner to get it off the cut end.
Time now to flatten the seam, not much to say really, just hit it hard - seemed to work for me. Then I repeated all of that on the other side!
Job done - can't believe it. So I did a bonus job - I cut down and dry fitted the petrol filler flap assembly into the fibreglass carrier. I cut a larger diameter hole in the fibreglass where the remote release fits, because it will only clamp onto the thickness of the Mondeo part. Just for fun I then connected up the remote flap release and tested it. It worked!
A good weekend - I guess that keeps mine and Munkyking's builds on about level pegging, although I have cut my doors and removed the mirrors. If you're careful, you can remove the wiring from the mirror motor plug which means you can then pull it back through the connection tube - this means you don't have to join the wires back together. I'm hoping this will mean they're long enough to use in the new mirrors, we'll see.

Report from the weekend of the 15th. Only got to spend part of Saturday working on the car. However, I tightened up the track rod extensions so they were tight up to the track rod ball joints (could've done with the gorilla there!). At least the wheels now point vaguely forwards and not at right angles to the car! They get done (cut) properly next weekend. Main job was the petrol filler assembly.
Here's where the trained gorilla re-appeared... the rubber hose on the end of the breather pipe had been clamped so hard that it had cut through the hose. I guess it was still sealed on the end of the pipe, but it wasn't going to go back on in that state. For those who haven't got this far - this connection is made in the limited space between the engine and the panel at the rear of the passenger compartment. Cutting off the end of the hose without cutting off the end of a finger was not much fun and only partially successful - anyway the hose is fine......
I removed the bracket that held the filler and breather pipes (it also has a standoff to another small pipe), inverted it and used it to clamp the now cut and reconnected metal pipes. OK, it's not bolted to the body at the moment, but it's keeping those three pipes away from one another.

3Sixty Chat / Re: spacing between panels measurement?

I didn't get spacers with mine.. :-(    So far I've bought nuts, washers, bolts, but all the important bits were in the kit - so far! As for spacers, I thought I might need some for when I did the panel gaps so went to Screwfix and bought a mixed bag - I think they were listed as shims.

Not so quick update on my weekend's activities (under the car)!
Sat was most frustrating, but I did get the replacement bolts from the local Toyota dealer. I also called DNA, who got straight back to me, the upshot being that I should probably hit it even harder (in order to get the ball joint to separate). Then work rang - so that finished Sat.
Sunday dawned bright (and early) along with a brand new replacement ball joint separator fork. At last after much thumping the n/s one came apart, I removed the bolts and lower arm. Using my pretend Dremel sanded down the diameter of the upper rubber on the drop link, then fitted the lower arm and suspension drop plates etc. Hey n/s done!
Now the offside, well .... it started off well enough and surprisingly the 17mm horizontal bolt in the lower arm that had resisted all efforts last week to remove it, gave up without a fight. It looked like it had corroded along its entire length inside the bush in the lower arm which was perhaps why it was a bit stubborn. The 19mm nut on the ball joint was still refusing to budge, so it was the turn of the angle grinder to try and remove it. There's not a lot of room to wield an angle grinder there.... Eventually I cut through it having removed aout a third of the nut - it still wouldn't drop off, but a spanner could turn it and so it came off. Here's where I went back to the ball joint fork tool and a large hammer! Puting the o/s back together was much quicker as I think I found most of the gotchas when doing the n/s.
Next weekend - adjust the tracking and onto the petrol pipes.

Hi, there is another fuse listed, in the same box, but at the other end of that line of fuses it says of type B
51. MAIN 40 A: Starter system, "H-LP LH" and "H-LP RH" fuses
now it might be that's code for headlights, on the other hand.......

Do the people you know want to buy parts from any MR2 that's being converted, or just that one? I'm sure a few of us must have some panels, headlights etc for sale!

Hi MADMAN, my book shows the headlight fuses to be in the block to the left of the battery in the engine bay. It says:
43. HEAD RH 15 A: Right-hand headlight
44. HEAD LH 15 A: Left-hand headlight

Don't know whether that helps or not,  but it's different to other postings, so maybe?
