« on: May 08, 2021, 09:15:42 PM »
Sadly Mick Coomer’s car will be looking for a new home after the 19 May 2021 Micks funeral where she will be following the hearse.
She is a DNA Westcoast based on an SL 500.
Factory converted with so many extras! Nappa leather bespoke trim and seats, steering wheel.  Lots of carbon fibre trim fitted and some new panels yet to be taken out if the wrappers. Specialist exhaust fabricated specifically for her.
Specialist wheels to Micks specification. Many of you will have seen her at shows as Mick loved to take her out.
She is a Class winner at shows and is a very impressive car.

A Funny Thing Happened When ... / Knebworth.
« on: August 27, 2019, 11:43:07 AM »
Well I was using my DNA.  Spent the weekend at a very hot Knebworth.  JJ and I sank a few pints, mostly iced water.

When I got home I found we have a new kitten moved in.  A mitted, seal ragdoll, her name is Bianca.

The Furrari won it's class, and amazingly for a kit car, was nominated for Best In Show.

West Coast chat / From the composit shop.
« on: April 02, 2019, 10:59:03 AM »
I can't find my previous topic “ Fibreglass and stuff” so I’ll start a new topic which reflects more accurately the work it shows.  It’s a separate topic from “Furrari Build” as some of the work is a bit specific to composite work which not all our forum members are interested in.

Anybody with experience in composite (and anybody else) feel free to jump in and help me as most of this lot is made up as I go along on my journey in composite world.

General Chitchat / Spanners

I’ve just helped a mate change his battery.  He did bring his one and only spanner with him   1/8” Whitworth.  He is more used to working in an office.

Other kitcar chat / 250GT Cal
« on: January 07, 2019, 11:41:37 AM »
Just found a thing on Google.  One of the two remaining Ferris 250 GT California’s sold in the middle of last year for $407,000 so we’ve a way to go yet.

Other kitcar chat / Fibreglass and things

Going back about four years to when I first had the current Furrari I had a rattle at the back.  This was finally tracked down down to the ( Mk1) calipurr support bracket.  DNA provided me with an upgraded set of brackets which were also fitted to later West Coasts.

Step forwards to quite recently, a familiar rattle returned.  The MOT was due the next week so while it was up on the ramp we had a look.   The brackets were OK but the calipurr itself was broken where it joined the bracket.

I just happen to have one original calipurr moulding and was going to use that but talking to various people at The Stoneleigh show it seems that we need about 10 of these in the club.  It would seem reasonable to see if we could reproduce these.

The stuff to make a mould has been ordered.  I’m debating how to do the calipurrs themselves.  The originals are made of PU but the equipment you need is quite expensive so I think GRP is my first choice.

Watch this space to see how we progress.

How hard can it be.

General Chitchat / Light bulbs.
« on: March 04, 2018, 08:43:37 PM »
Nothing at all to do with cars but a useful tip.

We had the light bulb in the oven go.  We got a spare bulb kit.  This consists ( not surprisingly) of a bulb, a new glass dome and a plastic tool thing to help you undo the old dome.  Sticky out bits on the dome correspond to sticky in bits in the plastic tool.  As the bulb is in the roof of the oven, at the back and the design of the glass/plastic things cause the bits to cam out as you are trying to turn the thing and push it upwards at the same time.

After many attempts I had an idea.  I put a piece of kitchen towel between the plastic thing and the glass.  Result.  It undid first go.

So if you are having a problem undoing a slippy glass thing, try a kitchen towel on it.

I would have tried elastic bands but the taper on the glass meant they slipped off.

Insurance / MOT is changing.
« on: March 02, 2018, 11:54:10 AM »
I’ve put this post under insurance as this seems the most appropriate.

The MOT is changing.  It now has faults listed as

Dangerous
Major.  and
Minor.

It shouldn’t make getting an MOT any more difficult unless you have a diesel where emissions are tightened up.

Dangerous cars are off the road immediately.  Not a bad thing. Minor faults are now listed on the certificate rather than as an advisory.

Why.  It’s an EU thing.  I thought we were leaving the EU, but until we do we still have to comply with the edicts.

West Coast chat / Well that didn’t work.
« on: February 03, 2018, 10:47:21 PM »
In a recent post on another thread I said that all you needed for a boot light switch was a miniature PIR and a 3v relay.  JJ asked for details.  As I had the bits I said I would build him one.

I normally draw a circuit and breadboard the circuit when I start a job but as there was only two components I didn’t bother, I just soldered it on a bit of vero board.  Tested it and it didn’t work.  Hme.....

I put 3v across the relay coil and it clicked in OK.  5v across the PIR and the correct 3.5 volt output, so why wouldn’t it work.  On to google, the specs of the component said it should work.  Then I realised the bits were built of Chinesium.  When I checked the output voltage of the PIR with the relay coil in circuit the output of the PIR dropped to near zero.  It seems that not all components give the rated output.

Solution.  Design a better circuit.  I’ve drawn the circuit but as it’s in pencil it won’t photograph, so tomorrow I’ll draw it a bit better, photograph it and post it.

General Chitchat / Druscilla
« on: October 02, 2017, 09:31:27 AM »
Nothing to do with cars, just a brag.

Some of you may remember we took on a rescue cat and although she was a pedigree Devon Rex.  Because we had no paperwork for her she can only be shown as a household pet.  We don't know what whe was called before but we call her Druscilla Penny ( a Carpenters song)

Druscilla went to her first show this weekend ( Event City, Manchester, where we had the car show a couple of weeks ago).   She won best household pet in show.  Well done Dru,  one of the furries in Furrari.

West Coast chat / Furrari diffuser wing.
« on: July 28, 2017, 10:15:58 PM »
Those of you who have followed my Furrari Build may have noticed that the diffuser wing I was building disappeared from the narrative before it was finished.

There's a good reason.  I was ready to bond the end winglets on when my good lady placed a load of cat bedding on it.  As I had to prioritise other jobs this was left.  When I went back to it it had taken a set.  I tried to straighten it using a hot air gun but it cracked at one of the joints.

This thread is the story of the design, build and fitting of the new, super wing.
