Redesign of the rh wing end/winglet

Pic 1). The design on the computer

Pic 2). The part on the printer.

Pic 3). (To follow) the part with the printing supports removed and sanded.  It feels very solid.

I think I'll sand the winglet part before I bond this bit to the wing as it'll be easier to handle.

I won't show the left hand bit as it's just a mirror image of this part.

Don't know why the iPhone and iPad have turned the pics sideways, I probably a computer thing.

Not all problems can be solved with gaffer tape.  For those there is WD40.
Not even gaffer tape can fix stupid, but it can mask the sound.

If you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

I've bonded on the winglets/end supports and used a couple of jacks to position the bonded assembly.  When I offered up the intermediate supports I decided I didn't like where they positioned themselves. So it's a redesign.  The new ones look very similar to the old ones but I hope they will fit a bit better.
No pictures 'cos they look just like the old ones.
Pity they aren't right as they were rubbed down and ready to go for paint.

I HATE RUBBING DOWN !!!

Over the time since the last post the wing has developed " peaks" where each part is bonded to the next.  Not as bad as I expected but still there.  Many thin coats of filler has reduced these to an acceptable level.  The thin edge is a bit uneven, again less than expected but it was always my plan to finish it with a rubber edging, just don't know what yet.

Just a couple of pics of the wing with a coat of primer on to check for major problems.

Pic1). The wing overall but you can't see much detail.
Pic2). The second is a pic of the winglet detail.  It looks as though it's a bit small for the size of the wing but when the other supports fitted I think it will be a bit more to scale.

Printer in today for a service to the hot end, I'll pick it up on the way back from Manchester.  Pity I couldn't finish the intermediate supports before I had to take it in but the print quality was getting a bit rough.  With the car to clean I will only lose a couple of days printing.

First coat of self levelling resin on the wing.  This should be enough for most prints but with the size of this job I think at least one more coat will be required.  Looking good.

I have definatly made a mistake.  The top face of the wing I have given two coats of self levelling resin.  No problems there.  Ready to go back to the final rub down next week.

I haven't got much of this resin left and ( when you include the postage) is expensive.   But I had a lot of casting resin left from another job left over so I used that on the bottom of the wing.  Not a good idea.  The smoothing resin is designed to work (cure) in a thin layer.  If you leave it in the mixing jar it gets very hot, may smoke and can even catch fire as it cures.
The casting resin on the other hand is designed to work in bulk as you cast with it.  In a thin layer it doesn't want to set.  24 hours after painting it on it's still very tacky.  WHOOPS.   I'll leave it outside, in a cat free area, until I get back from Manchester.  If it still hasn't set I'll find some way of getting it off, I'm sure there's a way.

Lean from my mistake and don't use the wrong resin.

JJ.  I hope it will be.  I should be getting the printer back on Monday.  I will print the remaining supports off on Tues/Wed and depending on sorting the resin problem be over for paint by the end of next week.

I was hoping your new car would be finished by the Shepton Mallet show.

See you soon

Mick

Printers back and now with the new, upgraded, bi-metallic extruder with high temp, steel plated nozzles.

Wing now ready to go to paint, just the two supports left to do.

Seriph.  I certainly is.  It's also very depressing when a tool packs up half way through a job.

Took the printer back today.
The people fixing my printer are currently working with Hallam University developing prosthetics.  The one they are doing at the moment is for a young girl who has lost part of her arm.  The first attempt is now finished.  It's a bit spooky to see a very realistic arm/hand poking out of a carrier bag on the desk

This thread ground to a halt due to printer problems.  The Flashforge is still having problems but I have the use of a QiDi machine.  It's built like a brick outhouse with a steel frame, as Jill was at a cat show, I had to get both of the boy cats to help me.  It may be solid but the software it uses is state of the ark.

With so many problems with the Flashforge I've run out of PLA Plus, and to be honest I'm not very impressed with it for its price so I've reprinted a set of intermediate supports in PLA.  At the moment I'm waiting for these to cool down so I can take them out of the oven.  Yes the oven.

PLA can be annealed in a domestic oven, this should increase the strength by 40% and the stiffness by 25%.  ( now there's an idea).  It looks from YouTube that people just heat the oven to 100 degrees and put the bits in for an idea and then take them out.  As an old fashioned engineer I've heated them up gradually to heat them through and cooled them down gradually so we'll see haw they feel later.

This means that the finished wing won't be at Shepton Mallet but I still hope to have it there Heldon with double sited tape.

No pics as I'm sure some of you know what an oven look like.

After many false dawns the rear wing and its intermediate mountings are with Carbon Magic in Coventry for dipping.  I've also dropped the grill down at Wayn's for painting satin black as the original plastic was looking a bit gray.
At the same time as the grill goes back on it will have NOVITEC badging.  Before I fit the badge I have to make a retainer for the mounting.  This is an easy job once I have designed and made the tool for inserting the brass inserts into the badge mountings.  For this I've ordered a new glass bed and clips.

Photos when it's all done.
