Front lower Ball Joint ABC
« on: June 20, 2016, 11:31:40 AM »
So following more research and not wanting to pay the £1200+ cost of a new strut I found this, would you believe from Essex on sale now from fleabay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391336236819?clk_rvr_id=1049085938271&rmvSB=true

cost £22.80 with free shipping!!

Maybe worth having them on the shelf in case at that price.

List with other part No etc.

MATCHING PART NUMBERS
It is recommended that you check the part number stamped on your old part to see if it matches any of the numbers below, this is only truly accurate way to be absolutely sure what part the manufacturer originally fitted to your vehicle...

I'm currently having a heavy duty one fitted. I will let you know hoe it goes when I get my strut back hopefully intime to fit it for the weekend and Castle Combe.

So good news for once, collected the strut yesterday, installed last night and tested. The ABC all appears ok no faults showing. Car went back to the MOT station and got a pass with no advisories....

Just need to clean it now ready for the weekend run to Castle Combe.

This is what the new HD ball joint looks like, my old one was too damaged to repair, and I think I would rather have a new one with a warranty even if it did cost £400.

Looking at the Arnot strut replacement video they say you need a star diagnostic to enable the valve on the new strut .  I take it this step was not required as the strut had previously been used in the car? Also did you have to follow any procedure to ensure that there is no air in the hydraulic system  , repeated raising and lowering of the car?

The star system has a rodeo option on it to make the car dance to purge the air out of the system. I think £400 is worth it to drive a car like this, you don't want to drive anything else ever again.

There are a few simple steps to do.

Remove 2 fuses, clearly have the weight off the strut (Well you need that to take the strut off!) and open the bleed nipple on the pipe to remove any pressure.

Then its just a case of undoing the nut on the old ball joint, the 3 on the top of the strut, the sensor on the top of the strut, then the fun starts....

Break the ball joint free, you cant get a clean hit on it due to the tie rod, and you can't fit a puller on it, its the old fashioned hit it method on the nut until it comes off.

Clean the area around the "Quick release valve" and remove. Mine would not come off at all so was unscrewed from the manifold.
Even the Merc garage was unable to remove it and said it would be fine to put back on as is. (no leaks we tested it quite a lot)

Then just refit. Normal issue trying to tighten up a new ball joint, in that the joint will turn before you get enough "bite" on the cone to overcome it.
To sort out the air you just raise and lower the car 10-20 times and it self bleeds. Hardest bit so far is finding a Merc dealer with any ABC fluid so I can top it back up, You only lose a small amount of fluid.

If anyone has any and is going to Castle Combe I would be grateful of a few drops!!

All in All not too bad and its a heavy duty replacement with warrenty.
