Car painting question
« on: May 21, 2015, 07:05:39 PM »
If a car is White already, and I would like to get it a lamborghini balloon White or pearl White
Would it help that it's White already?
Or does it need to be sanded right back and primed again

Tricky

If the car is already painted white and its Ok to flat down ready to paint then white is better than a dark colour or red.when doing a pearl if its white then you would first lay down a white ground coat applicable to whichever white youve chosen.then you'd lay down your pearl coat over this to the desired pearl effect.the pearl is see through so the ground coat needs to be a good solid and nicely layed down.

The advantage of a white car already means the ground coat will be brighter than say laying it down on a blue car or dark colour car.it could bleed through and turn the white darker so yes much easier on a already white car.as long as the paints in good nick.if not I'd suggest then priming it back up in white first then paint it.

I've done many 2-3 stage pearls and take some practice if not done correctly can look terrible.

Hope the info helps :)

day dreaming as usual  ;D

will the cost to do a pearl white over an existing white car be cheaper then?
or would it cost the same as a completely different colour

Well if you don't need to completely reprime the car then yes but pearl paint jobs are expensive compared to normal paint jobs as the paints are dearer.and if you use cheap paint like some garages do then it won't be as good.waterbase is the way to go if you want a great pearl job :)

           A up Wayne,
Is waterbase the way to go for all paint, ie Red plus clear coat?  do you also need infra red lights for drying?

Waterbase in my opinion is far better than solvent as you don't get the same paint reactions or problems.a lot of people don't like using it as its too hard to paint for them and you do have to force dry it with special blowers.it doesn't dry naturally like solvent unless you use a manufacture which use drying solution within the paint.

Ie when checking colour you have to spray the cards out first as waterbase is never the Same colour wet and it is dry.if spraying a silver car when its applied it will go on either a blue or purple ish colour then dry through the coats til it reaches silver and I think it scares many body shops who don't have the skill or knowledge with them.but solvent car paints are illegal now to sell (unless sold as something else) so all body shops are supposed to be voc compliant now using waterbourne paints etc

Its personal choice madman but you should try some one day.cone down ile let you spray some panels in the booth so you can see how it goes.

Plus also you need a special spray gun for waterbase paints.my gun is a Sata chip foose costing me around £700 and I have 2 of them.and that's just for base.for laquer you need another gun.i try to use a differant gun for every application to save contamination.so all in all I have around 7 Sata and devillbiss guns ranging from 300-700 each so it's defo not cheap running a paint shop but in my opinion you have to be up to scratch with today's ins and outs.

Ile get the kettle on for when you come for training buddy :)

Sounds good M8,
Especially the offer of training from the Master. But the cost of set up sounds expensive for the amount of cars I paint in a year.
But with an offer like that I can,t refuse.
I will definitely come down to see you at some point, it,s finding time in between holidays  ;) ;) (talking of hols. it,s not far off Wednesday, Skiathos here I come)
Now get some time on your 458 it cant be far away now
Cheers MADMAN 8)
