We don’t usually show pictures of tools but I had to post this drill press/bush inserter because  it’s so cute ( tools are cute?, I’m a sad person). It’s a mini drill press and a temperature controlled soldering iron with a 3D printed adaptor joining them together for hot inserting bushes into prints so they will take screws.

Not all problems can be solved with gaffer tape.  For those there is WD40.
Not even gaffer tape can fix stupid, but it can mask the sound.

If you can’t buy it or steal it you have to make it.

Now I’ve made my cute little bush inserter I’ve put the bushes into the back of the badge support and stuck the NOVITEC badge on the front and mounted it on the grill that I collected from Beemaman last week. (Thanks Wayne)  This is now in the pile of bits to go on the car when it’s a bit warmer.

These days fitting the grill takes me about 45 mins.  20 to get down; 5 to fit the grill and 20 to get back up.

It was always my intention to put the switches for the auxiliary lights, indicators and exhaust in the top of the armrest rather than the spiders web of wiring that some of you may have seen under my bonnet.

I’ve designed and printed the panel in two parts because the panel is 260mm long and I can only print 215mm long.  I’ve shown it/them at half scale in the picture to show them as one piece.

There are three on/off/on switches with LED indicators next to them.  An LCD display panel and room for three potentiometers to control the displays and LEDs (I’ve made them but not finished them).  I had some room left so I’ve added coin slots for £2. and 50 pences at the back and £1. at the front.

It’s got to be sanded and joined before going for dipping so it will be some time before it’s in.  I’ve got the software to write first as well.

Some minor mods to the centre switch panel ( bigger radiuses ).  Bonded, filled, sanded and sent down to Wicked Coatings in Poole who did the rest of the interior originally.
No pictures 'cos it looks more or less like the previous pictures.

The wiring is breadboarded.  The wiring and the software tested and working.  I’m going to have a go at making a printed circuit board (PCB) for it.  Never done a PCB before but why not.  Pictures of the breadboard and the PCB when it’s all built and tested.

Not very clear but this is the layout of the PCB.  If anybody can spot any errors please let me know as this is my first attempt.

My first go at printing a PCB. ( well one side of it)

After printing it on my normal printer I got it photocopied on a laser copier that uses toner.  I cleaned the copper board with fine wet or dry and then acetone, positioned the 'copy on it and fixed it with a bit of capton tape.
With it in place I followed the vid on YouTube.  Ironing it through a bit of kitchen towel.  Nothing.  Tried again.  Still nothing.  Finally I ironed the back of the print directly and used a lot more force, let it cool and it was stuck, just as it was supposed to.  Into some water and soaked it for five minutes.  The paper came off the copper almost cleanly.  A bit of a rub and the rest came off.   This method is called the toner transfere method.

I’m not 100% happy with the transfere so I inked in the pads I’m going to solder to with etch resistant ink.

Next I’ve got to drill the holes in the pads.  That’s for tomorrow.
